Kryzys wieku średniego w Tkankach miękkich Zyty Rudzkiej i Cząstkach elementarnych Michela Houllebecqa
Abstract
This article discusses the problem of the midlife crisis in the latest realistic prose. The author refers to two novels: Elementary Particles by Michel Houllebecq and Soft Tissues by Zyta Rudzka. In both works, the heroes are educated men experiencing a midlife crisis. They fight against the passage of time, dreaming of the remission of old age, which is marginalized in global culture. The protagonists are afraid of losing their attractiveness, masking their true biological age through beauty treatments or cosmetics. When telling their story about old age, they also talk about the emotions, experiences and fears that accompany them. It becomes problematic not only to build relationships with other people, but also to open up to new acquaintances. Both Houllebecq and Rudzka show that the patriarchal tradition is also oppressive towards men. The midlife crisis presented in both novels raises questions about building a new male identity, taking into account not only young but also mature men, for whom the fight against the aging process should not be dominated by concern for the body, but primarily by intellectual development.
