Sharing Experiences in Narratives as a Factor in the Development of Self-Perception

Keywords: narrative psychology, life-span development, life story, identity, meaning-making

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This text points out the limitations and possible misunderstandings within the narrative approach in relation to the area of self-understanding and life history.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Recognised concepts of development, autobiographical memory were reviewed and supplemented by the field of clinical psychology.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Narrative psychology assumes that meanings are constructed in language, however, reducing the change in self-understanding to a linguistic process may risk bypassing the role of direct experience and sharing in relationship. The development of narrative schemas in adulthood results from experiencing limitations, and the linguistic elaboration of experience occurs in contact with another person. Voices can be found emphasising the role of sharing a personal experience before it is related to a global pattern.
RESEARCH RESULTS: The impetus for development is the actual experience of being out of balance (rather than a mere change of narrative), and it is important to share this experience in dialogue. Moreover, a stage of suspension of inscription into an overarching system of meanings seems to be necessary in this process.
CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The practice of psychological help and psychotherapy should first take into account the role of the experience to stimulate change and its conscious experience and the relationship that gives space for their safe authentic expression before it is framed within a coherent narrative.
