Audiovisual Forms in Art Therapy. An Introduction to the Issues
Abstract
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to introduce the issue of using audiovisual forms in art therapy and to define their potential therapeutic value within the context of contemporary practices.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The central research problem concerns the ways and extent to which audiovisual forms can support the therapeutic process. The study employs a literature review as well as a comparative analysis of existing theoretical approaches and therapeutic practices involving media.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article examines the historical and theoretical back- ground of integrating audiovisual forms into art therapy. It then classifies the primary types of application: film therapy, creative film expression, and experimental audiovisual forms. Furthermore, it discusses the therapeutic potential of these modalities, along with limitations related to their use – such as legal, ethical, and technological barriers.
RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis reveals that audiovisual forms can effectively support the therapeutic process, particularly when working with individuals who have limited communication abilities or who are experiencing intense emotional states. Their multimedia nature enables com- plex, multisensory expression and fosters the integration of personal narratives.
CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: This article presents preliminary reflections on the topic. The author advocates for the expansion of media competencies among art therapists. The issues discussed herein highlight the need for further re- search into the effectiveness and safety of incorporating audiovisual forms into therapeutic practice.
