Motives of educational activity of men realizing their role as fathers engaged in raising their children after divorce
Abstract
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The main scientific objective of the article is to analyze and present men’s narratives on the motives for educational activities undertaken by them when experiencing difficulties in contact with their children after divorce.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article attempts to answer the question: What are the motives for educational activities undertaken by fathers who care about the quality of their relationship with their child after divorce? The research was conducted within a qualitative framework, using narrative interviews.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The introduction covers the description of the situation of fathers in the light of a changing world and the necessity to accommodate to new roles associated with moving away from gender-stereotypical activities. The next section characterizes men in the role of fathers engaged in raising their children. The empirical part is devoted to the analysis of the statements of surveyed fathers.
RESEARCH RESULTS: Analysis of the research material allowed identifying three main reasons why the fathers surveyed want to expand their knowledge of fathering skills that would help them cope with the difficult situation resulting from the breakdown of their family. These are: acquiring the skills to deal with their ex-partner, the desire to improve their parenting skills, and gaining knowledge about how to cope during the divorce process.
CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The results of the study reveal fathers’ commitment to expanding their pedagogical knowledge in order to maintain contact with their children and improve their relationship with their ex-partner.
