Keywords: hidden curriculum, emotional labor, social inequalities, equality education, critical pedagogy

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific goal of the article is to present emotional labor as a pedagogical category and the role of school education in preparing for its performance.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is to present the role and value of women’s emotional labor in society and the role of process of socialization and education of girls and boys to engage in it or avoid it. The method used was analysis and interpretation of the literature on the subject from a sociological, psychological, and pedagogical perspective in relation to emotional labor.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The first part of the text discusses the concepts of emotional labor as conceptualized by Arlie Russell Hochschild and Rose Hackman. Then, it shows the emotional socialization of girls toward an ethic of care according to the concept of Carol Gilligan and of boys toward hegemonic masculinity (detachment) as it is conceptualized by Raewyn Connell.

RESEARCH RESULTS: School education was identified as a source of social inequality and its consequences. Inspired by a critical paradigm and an emancipatory approach to scientific theories, the research on the hidden curriculum, conducted all over the world and in Poland, is was discussed from the perspective of transmitting gender inequalities. Emotional difficulties experienced by male and female students arise as a result of gendered education, and their consequences in adulthood are analyzed.

CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The social and cultural approach to emotional labor is becoming one of the most significant mechanisms of reproducing gender inequalities in family and professional life. Its change is crucial, and an important area for change is the field of school education: transformation of the hidden curriculum, revealing it, analyzing and reshaping it in such a way that it could support gender equality, critical awareness, and student agency.
