Analysis of the Discourse on Masculinity in Christian Guides to Spiritual Life (on Selected Examples)
Abstract
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to show what cultural patterns, especially biblical ones, the authors of spiritual life guides ( J. Eldredge, S. Weber, D. Murrow) refer to, in order to promote the ideals of Christian and male spirituality.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main issue of the article is covered in the question, how is the discourse on masculinity is constructed in Christian guides of spiritual life. The research method involves the in-depth analysis of source literature, and the presentation of the most important threads regarding the construction of masculinity in the guides of the authors mentioned above.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article issue is initiated by considerations regarding the research area, the purpose of the work, and an indication of the specific genre of the guide. These initial observations served to reveal the basic and fundamental conceptualizations of masculinity in individual publications. In particular, it looked at how the authors of guides construct the model of masculinity in reference to biblical texts.
RESEARCH RESULTS: Thanks to the analysis of the literature on the subject, a way of perceiving masculinity as extremely homogeneous was presented, referring to figures stereotypically associated with it, such as wildness, fighting, adventure, etc. This simplified vision seems to influence the world of Christian ideas related to the understanding of masculinity.
CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The Christian discourse on masculinity is influenced by the ideas contained in the guides of American writers facing up the weakening of traditional roles assigned to men. The analysis of these guides allows us to show the limitations of the presented threads and ideas, and may be a contribution to the discussion on the vision of masculinity in the area of Christianity, thought „differently” and „beyond” the patterns presented in the guides.
