Growing in Humanity in the Pedagogy of Accompaniment
Abstract
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to present the assumptions of the pedagogy of accompaniment developed by Professor Zbigniew Marek as a theoretical and practical foundation for the integral and holistic development of the human person.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem was formulated as follows: What are the theoretical foundations of the pedagogy of accompaniment in Zbigniew Marek’s conception, and what possibilities for its application can be identified in educational processes? The study employed a qualitative content analysis based on a hermeneutic-interpretative approach.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The argumentative process consists of an introduction and three issue parts: the inspirations and anthropological foundations of the pedagogy of accompaniment, its relationships to the Spiritual Exercises and Ignatian pedagogy, and the principles of educational accompaniment in the process of the humanity growth. The analysis focuses on reconstructing the fundamental anthropological, axiological, and pedagogical categories present in Zbigniew Marek’s conception.
RESEARCH RESULTS: The pedagogy of accompaniment, rooted in the tradition of Jesuit upbringing and teaching as well as Ignatian pedagogy, provides a valuable foundation for educational practice oriented towards the integral development of the human being. Its principles create a coherent interpretative framework for contemporary processes of upbringing and education.
CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND APPLICABLE VALUE OF RESEARCH: The conducted analysis indicates the need for further research upon the possibilities of applying the pedagogy of accompaniment in the pedagogical practice. Of particular importance are educational relationships based on the subjective treatment of a person, respect for her/his dignity, and the pedagogical presence understood as “being with and for others” in the process of personal and social (communal) development.
