Aleksander Brückner, w Słowniku etymologicznym języka polskiego
(1926-27) napisał, że sumienie to znaczy „mniemać tak
i siak”. Już to określenie wprowadza w poważną zadumę, gdyż
właściwie to nie wiadomo, czym to sumienie jest, chociaż pewne
o nim pojęcie posiadamy – w sumieniu człowiek rozważa, roztrząsa,
osądza.
